Indonesia has taken a major step forward in naval modernization with the launch of KRI Balaputradewa-322, the country’s first domestically constructed Arrowhead 140-class frigate.

The warship measures 140 meters in length and 19.8 meters in beam, with a standard displacement of approximately 6,000 tons. Powered by a Combined Diesel and Diesel (CODAD) propulsion system, the frigate is capable of reaching speeds of up to 28 knots.

Designed for multi-domain maritime operations, Balaputradewa-322 is configured for anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare, while also supporting electronic warfare, naval gunfire support, and layered air defense missions.

The vessel is named after Balaputradewa, a 9th-century ruler of the Srivijaya Empire, and is designed to accommodate a core crew of approximately 143 personnel, expandable to around 160 depending on mission requirements.

Its primary strike capability is delivered through a 64-cell Vertical Launch System (VLS), enabling the launch of medium-range air defense missiles and long-range anti-ship weapons. Close- and medium-range engagements are supported by two forward-mounted 76mm naval guns, while a 35mm Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) provides last-ditch defense against missiles, drones, and airborne threats.

The frigate was officially launched on December 18 at PT PAL Indonesia’s Surabaya shipyard, marking the first of two Arrowhead 140-class vessels ordered by the Indonesian Ministry of Defense. Although the design is licensed from Babcock International of the United Kingdom, construction was undertaken locally, underscoring Indonesia’s drive toward greater defense industrial self-reliance.
