The U.S. Navy showcased the SM‑2 Block IIIC/CU medium‑range surface‑to‑air missile at the Surface Navy Association (SNA) 2026 symposium, offering a closer look at the latest evolution of the Standard Missile‑2 family. Designated RIM‑66P, the missile features a hybrid guidance architecture combining semi‑active and active radio‑frequency seekers, along with updated control systems and modernized internal electronics.

Rather than a full redesign, the Block IIIC/CU focuses on extending service life while remaining fully compatible with existing shipboard launchers and combat systems. The missile reflects the Navy’s shift away from legacy semi‑active guidance toward a more flexible seeker derived from the SM‑6, reducing dependence on continuous radar illumination and increasing engagement capacity in complex air‑defense scenarios.
