Ashok Leyland Defence Systems has introduced a new 4×4 Mine Protected Vehicle (MPV) aimed at improving survivability and mobility for security forces operating in high-risk environments. The platform is specifically designed for counter-insurgency and internal security missions, with reports suggesting potential deployment with the Jammu and Kashmir Police in sensitive areas.
The MPV integrates strong protection features with operational versatility, addressing evolving threats such as improvised explosive devices (IEDs), landmines, and small arms fire. Built on a high-mobility platform, it is powered by an engine generating 220 to 245 horsepower, enabling speeds of up to 80 km/h while carrying a payload of around 1.5 tons.
Engineered for demanding terrains, the vehicle offers a gradeability of 25 degrees, allowing it to operate effectively in mountainous and semi-urban regions. It can accommodate a crew of 2+10 personnel, making it suitable for troop transport, patrol duties, and rapid response missions.
A key strength of the vehicle lies in its protection system, which meets NATO STANAG 4569 Level III ballistic standards, providing resistance against high-velocity small arms threats. It also incorporates enhanced mine and blast protection to safeguard occupants from explosive hazards.
The MPV is designed to withstand blasts of up to 14 kg of TNT under the hull and 21 kg under the wheels, significantly improving crew survivability during mine or IED incidents. Additionally, certain configurations offer protection against 10 kg TNT blasts, reflecting a layered defense approach based on threat conditions.
To improve situational awareness, the platform can be fitted with optional surveillance systems, including a Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) camera for 360-degree visibility, as well as front and rear cameras with infrared capability for low-light and adverse weather operations.
The development of this MPV aligns with India’s broader push toward indigenous defense solutions to strengthen internal security. Vehicles of this type are essential for ensuring troop safety during convoy operations, area patrols, and counter-terrorism missions.
