Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and Canada’s E3 Lithium have entered into an agreement to explore the integration of Canadian lithium into the supply chain for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP). In addition to supporting the submarine program, the partnership will evaluate opportunities to utilize Canada’s lithium resources for international markets.

Lithium-ion batteries offer significantly higher energy density compared to traditional lead-acid systems, enabling submarines to remain submerged for extended durations. By collaborating with E3 Lithium, TKMS aims to secure a domestic source for this critical component, strengthening its position in the competition for the more than $30 billion CPSP.

TKMS is currently one of two finalists for the program, competing with South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean to deliver 12 conventionally powered submarines for the Royal Canadian Navy.

E3 Lithium is a key player in Canada’s lithium sector, holding one of the country’s largest resource bases. Through its Clearwater Project, the company is projected to produce up to 36,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium annually at full capacity.

Under the agreement, E3 will contribute expertise in lithium extraction, processing, and development to help establish a resilient supply chain for the submarine program, while also supporting potential international applications. The collaboration will further include joint research initiatives, investment opportunities, and technology transfer.
