Northrop Grumman and Boeing have completed a technology demonstration showcasing the first automated crewed-uncrewed teaming between the MQ-4C Triton unmanned aircraft and the P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.

The jointly funded demonstration enabled the uncrewed Triton and piloted Poseidon to exchange maritime intelligence through a standardized machine-to-machine interface supported by artificial intelligence (AI) and an open systems architecture.

During the demonstration, the high-altitude, long-endurance Triton used AI algorithms to respond to a request from the P-8A, improving automated interoperability between the two platforms for maritime intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, targeting, and anti-surface warfare missions.

Enhancing Interoperability

The demonstration employed the Universal Command and Control Interface, a standardized machine-to-machine collaboration protocol based on the Open Mission Systems and Autonomy – Government Reference Architecture.

Through this interface, Triton can exchange mission data with compatible platforms beyond the P-8A. This capability enables operators to integrate different systems more rapidly while potentially reducing associated integration costs.

The demonstration also highlights continued industry investment in advanced technologies designed to provide operational advantages against evolving maritime threats.

In addition to the US Navy, the MQ-4C Triton is operated by the Royal Australian Air Force and has also been considered for acquisition by NATO.
