thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has entered into a teaming agreement with India’s VEM Technologies to jointly manufacture heavyweight torpedoes in India. The partnership represents the next step in cooperation between the two companies after signing a memorandum of understanding in 2025.
In its initial phase, the agreement will support production of heavyweight torpedoes for the Indian Navy’s current submarine fleet. Atlas Elektronik, a subsidiary of TKMS, will facilitate the transfer of technologies and software licenses required to enable torpedo manufacturing at VEM’s facilities in India.
According to Indian media reports, the collaboration could lead to the annual production of around 500 torpedoes under the program.
Potential for Expanded Cooperation
The partnership could eventually grow into broader collaboration on future torpedo development projects. Over the medium term, the companies may establish a joint venture to supply heavyweight torpedoes for the Indian market and pursue export opportunities.
The agreement further strengthens TKMS’s role in India’s naval modernization efforts. In 2025, the company also partnered with CFF Fluid Control Limited in Mumbai to jointly develop and manufacture advanced anti-submarine warfare systems for naval platforms and other defense applications.
Separately, a joint proposal by thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited was selected to build six advanced conventional submarines for the Indian Navy, further deepening German participation in the country’s naval programs.
