Bengaluru-based SSS Defence, one of India’s leading private-sector small arms manufacturers, has unveiled a major upgrade to its sniper rifle lineup with the introduction of the Viper Mach 2. The new platform marks the start of a broader modernization programme focused on enhancing the company’s precision weapon systems.
Nearly nine years after the original Viper emerged as one of India’s first indigenously designed sniper rifles, SSS Defence is now introducing a significantly refreshed version aimed at meeting modern operational requirements. The company described the Viper Mach 2 as a “solid makeover” of the original platform and the flagship of its next-generation sniper rifle upgrades.
According to company presentations, the redesigned rifle incorporates a completely reworked chassis and body structure. Key improvements include:
Reduced overall weight
Improved ergonomics and visual design
Additional modern features to enhance handling and operational performance
While retaining the core strengths of the original Viper platform, the Viper Mach 2 introduces contemporary enhancements intended for military, special forces, and law enforcement applications.
Legacy of the Viper Rifle
The original Viper sniper rifle, chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO / .308 Winchester, was developed as a sub-MOA precision weapon with an effective range exceeding 1,000 meters. Designed around the ergonomics and operational needs of Indian soldiers, the rifle was intended for both military and tactical law enforcement roles.
It was developed alongside the Saber sniper rifle chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum, capable of engagements beyond 1,500 meters. Together, the two platforms became the first sniper rifle systems fully designed and developed by a private Indian company.
SSS Defence’s sniper systems have already attracted interest from Indian state police organizations as well as overseas customers. The launch of the Viper Mach 2 comes as India continues pushing indigenous defence manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Beyond sniper systems, the company manufactures a broad portfolio that includes P72-series assault rifles, G72 submachine guns, suppressors, and barrels supported by advanced domestic manufacturing infrastructure.
The upgraded Viper Mach 2 is expected to improve modularity, reduce operator fatigue, and offer enhanced compatibility with modern optics, suppressors, and tactical accessories, strengthening its competitiveness in both Indian and export markets.
SSS Defence has also indicated that the Viper Mach 2 is only the beginning of wider upgrades planned across its sniper rifle family. Defence observers are now awaiting detailed specifications, trial evaluations, and possible induction timelines.
The programme further strengthens SSS Defence’s role as a key player in India’s growing private defence manufacturing ecosystem focused on delivering modern, cost-effective battlefield solutions.
