The launch of Japan’s QZS-7 satellite has completed the deployment phase of a US-Japan security-space program involving American surveillance sensors hosted on Japanese spacecraft.QZS-7 departed the Tanegashima Space Center aboard Japan’s H3 launch vehicle carrying the second US-built sensor associated with the initiative. Both payloads are mounted on Japanese satellites while remaining under US Space Force operational control.The sensors are designed to monitor objects in geosynchronous orbit, an important region of space located about 35,800 kilometers above Earth. The orbit contains numerous communications, navigation, and missile-warning satellites, making accurate tracking increasingly important to national security.Data collected by the payloads will be sent to the US Space Surveillance Network, providing information that can help maintain awareness of objects operating across the Indo-Pacific space environment.Mission Delta 2 will manage the surveillance payloads from Schriever Space Force Base in Colorado. The unit specializes in space-domain awareness and will use the information gathered by the sensors to support monitoring activities.The bilateral program was established through a 2020 agreement between Washington and Tokyo. It involves US payload development and Japanese satellite hosting, creating a cooperative model that combines capabilities from both countries.MIT Lincoln Laboratory developed the surveillance sensors, while Mitsubishi Electric produced the Japanese spacecraft and contributed to the integration process. The arrangement reflects the growing importance of joint space capabilities between the two allies.Japan’s QZSS constellation also plays an important role in the region by supplementing GPS coverage. The new surveillance mission adds another layer of cooperation, this time focused on monitoring activity beyond Earth’s atmosphere.The completed deployment is expected to strengthen US and Japanese awareness of activity in geosynchronous orbit and contribute to broader efforts to protect space-based infrastructure in the Indo-Pacific.
