Italian defense firm Leonardo has introduced its new 120mm L55 tank gun, designed to deliver higher muzzle velocity and extended range compared to earlier versions.
Fully self-funded, the 55-caliber smoothbore cannon incorporates a “self-forcing process” that allows for increased firing capacity, according to Rivista Italiana Difesa.
The L55 is an enhanced successor to the L44 and L45 models, featuring a longer barrel and reinforced construction to endure greater stress.
Weighing 500 kilograms (1,102 pounds) more than the L45, it offers a 5% boost in muzzle velocity, according to European Defence Review.
Developed for the next-gen Panther KF51 main battle tank—a joint project between Leonardo and Rheinmetall—the L55 will be mounted on 82 Italian Army units, while 50 German Army tanks will receive Rheinmetall’s L55A1 variant.
The Leonardo gun is also compatible with Italy’s ARIETE C2 tank and the AICS-120 combat vehicle, based on the Lynx KF41 platform.
Due to its significant recoil, the L55 is intended strictly for tracked armored vehicles.
