Kopin Corporation has secured a $21.5-million follow-on contract to provide thermal imaging assemblies for a portable US military weapon system.

The Massachusetts-based firm stated that the agreement covers production of a custom eyepiece assembly for a major US defense contractor, though the customer’s identity was not disclosed. The system is intended for detachable, man-portable thermal weapon platforms designed to operate in demanding battlefield environments.

Kopin will produce the assemblies using its proprietary microdisplays, optics, drive electronics, and ruggedized housing technologies. According to the company, the modules are designed to help military personnel detect and identify targets during both daytime and nighttime operations.

The company added that the contract supports the strengthening of US-based supply chains for mission-critical vision systems while reducing dependence on foreign-produced components.

Expanding Defense Portfolio

Kopin Corporation has continued to grow its defense business through multiple military-related contracts over the past year, delivering more than 400,000 defense vision systems and associated components across various programs.

In April, the company received a $3.2-million initial award to supply optical modules for a next-generation first-person-view drone goggle system. The agreement — Kopin’s first major contract in the drone market — could lead to deliveries of up to 40,000 units by 2028 for an undisclosed partner.

A month earlier, Kopin also secured a $3.6-million order for helmet-mounted display systems intended for an unnamed European military helicopter platform. Deliveries under the five-year contract are expected to begin in 2026, increasing the company’s order backlog to more than $10 million.

Previously, in September 2025, the United States Army awarded Kopin a $15.4-million contract to deliver ultra-bright, full-color MicroLED augmented reality displays for ground troops.
