South Korea is investing nearly 50 billion won ($36 million) to establish an AI defense robotics innovation hub that will bring together government agencies, industry, academia, and the military to accelerate the development and deployment of next-generation autonomous defense systems. The initiative is being led by South Chungcheong Province in partnership with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and the city of Nonsan.

The innovation cluster is designed to create a dedicated ecosystem that enables AI-powered defense technologies to progress more rapidly from research and development to operational military use, supporting South Korea’s broader ambition to strengthen its K-Defense industry.

The project will feature specialized facilities for research, testing, demonstration, and technology validation, while providing support for defense startups and commercial technology companies developing AI-enabled military solutions. Planned infrastructure includes a central support center, a demonstration facility, and a 45,000-square-meter testing ground in Nonsan for evaluating AI-driven robotic systems before field deployment.

Scheduled for completion by 2031, the initiative is expected to reinforce South Korea’s AI defense industrial base and generate an estimated 509 billion won ($368 million) in economic impact. The program complements the country’s wider military AI strategy, including the Add+i secure AI platform for classified research, the Naver–Korea Aerospace Industries sovereign AI partnership, and Hyundai Rotem’s AI-powered defense robotics development efforts.
