A potential $705-million sale of M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) to Australia has received approval from the US State Department.
The proposed package includes 48 HIMARS launchers, resupply trucks, trailers, training munitions, radio and intercom systems, and comprehensive sustainment support.
Lockheed Martin, L3Harris, Leonardo DRS, and Oshkosh Corporation have been named as the principal contractors.
The DSCA stated that the sale would advance US foreign policy goals by supporting a key Indo-Pacific ally, helping Australia defend critical infrastructure, and deepening joint operational compatibility.
Australia had previously ordered up to 42 HIMARS in 2023 to strengthen its long-range precision fires, inspired by the system’s success on the modern battlefield.
The first unit was delivered in March 2025, and a few months later, during a multinational live-fire exercise, the platform launched a Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) that hit a target over 300 kilometers away in four minutes, marking a breakthrough in Australia’s next-generation strike capability.
