Astra Microwave Products Limited has revealed that discussions with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) regarding the procurement of the indigenous Uttam Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar are nearing completion. During its Q4 and FY26 earnings conference call on May 27, 2026, the company stated that it anticipates receiving the official order in the third quarter of FY27, between July and September 2026.

Developed by DRDO’s Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), the Uttam AESA radar is an advanced indigenous fire-control radar designed to equip future Indian combat aircraft. Astra Microwave serves as the programme’s Development Cum Production Partner (DCPP) and is responsible for manufacturing critical components, including the Active Antenna Array Unit (AAAU).

The radar is planned for installation on the second batch of 97 LCA Tejas Mk1A fighters and is expected to deliver significant performance enhancements over earlier radar systems. Key improvements include extended detection ranges, simultaneous tracking of multiple targets, high-resolution imaging capabilities, and enhanced resilience against electronic warfare threats and jamming.

Securing the HAL contract would represent a major business achievement for Astra Microwave, opening the door to long-term revenue opportunities through large-scale radar production and supply for both new aircraft and modernization programs. The development also reinforces the company’s role as a prominent supplier of advanced indigenous defense electronics.

In addition, Astra Microwave reported continued progress on the Virupaksha AESA radar program intended for the Su-30MKI upgrade initiative. The company expects to complete the Active Antenna Array Unit in the coming months, with the fully integrated radar system targeted for completion by the end of 2026.
