In another sign of growing confidence in India’s indigenous defence industry, Bengaluru-based SSS Defence has completed a fresh delivery of its advanced G72 submachine guns to the Punjab Police this week. The development highlights the increasing adoption of domestically produced small arms by state law enforcement agencies, reducing dependence on foreign imports while providing forces with modern and mission-ready weapon systems.
The G72 SMG, chambered for the widely used 9x19mm NATO cartridge, has been specifically designed for urban combat and close-quarter battle (CQB) operations. Featuring a firing rate of around 900–950 rounds per minute, the weapon uses an advanced roller-delayed blowback mechanism that delivers controlled and accurate fire even during full-automatic engagements.
Built around a modular design philosophy, the G72 offers configurable barrel lengths, ambidextrous controls, a side-folding stock, and extensive Picatinny and M-LOK rail integration for optics, suppressors, lasers, and other tactical accessories. Its lightweight yet rugged construction makes it particularly suited for police SWAT teams, counter-terror units, and special operations personnel operating in high-threat environments.
According to recent updates from the company, the latest delivery represents more than a standard procurement programme. SSS Defence described it as the result of close cooperation between frontline users and the company’s engineering teams, ensuring that the platform is tailored to the operational requirements of Punjab Police personnel working under demanding conditions.
SSS Defence has steadily expanded its presence in India’s small arms sector in recent years. The G72 was recently selected as the lowest bidder (L1) for a major procurement of 500 units for the elite National Security Guard (NSG), signaling a gradual shift away from imported legacy systems such as the German MP5 toward indigenous alternatives.
Several state police forces, including Punjab Police and Uttar Pradesh Police, have already inducted variants of the G72 alongside SSS Defence’s M72 assault rifles and G72-P pistols. These achievements underline the company’s growing capabilities across the entire small-arms production chain, from weapon design and precision engineering to large-scale manufacturing, in line with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat defence manufacturing goals.
The induction of the G72 enhances close-quarters combat capability, rapid-response effectiveness, and operational flexibility for law enforcement agencies. Its compatibility with standard 9mm ammunition simplifies logistics, while its suppressor-ready configuration supports covert and stealth operations when required. As operational threats continue to evolve, such indigenous systems offer cost-effective and adaptable solutions that can be rapidly refined through user feedback.
SSS Defence continues to expand its portfolio with assault rifles, sniper systems, pistols, suppressors, and weapon upgrade kits, strengthening India’s long-term self-reliance in advanced small arms technology with every successful delivery.
