Navantia has confirmed that it is proposing its ALFA 4000 frigate to Sweden as a low-risk solution for the country’s four-ship Luleå program, offering delivery timelines of two vessels in 2030 and two more in 2031. The company stated that the design is closely aligned with Stockholm’s naval requirements and enables rapid operational readiness, while also highlighting opportunities for long-term industrial collaboration with Swedish partners.

The proposal builds on proven platforms and incorporates Swedish systems, leveraging Navantia’s previous cooperation with Saab. Sweden has not yet made a final decision regarding the Luleå program.

The ALFA 4000 is designed as a multi-role surface combatant capable of air defense, surface warfare, and anti-submarine operations. The vessel measures 120 meters in length with a beam of 16 meters and features a flight deck capable of supporting helicopters such as the NH-90 or SH-60, along with facilities for rigid-hull inflatable boats and accommodation for around 100 personnel.

It is equipped with a range of weapon systems, including air defense missiles, anti-ship missiles, torpedoes, and integrated sonar, all managed through a fully networked combat management system. Propulsion is provided by a combined diesel and electric system, enabling speeds exceeding 27 knots and an operational range of approximately 4,500 nautical miles.
