Canada has signed a C$2.6 billion ($1.88 billion) agreement with the United States to acquire 26 M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launchers for the Canadian Army, significantly boosting its long-range precision strike capabilities. Procured through the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, the package includes an initial inventory of munitions, spare parts, training, and sustainment support, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2029.

The acquisition follows US State Department approval granted in October 2025 and aligns with a broader production contract awarded to Lockheed Martin in April for HIMARS systems destined for the US military and several international customers, including Canada. Selected under Canada’s Long-Range Precision Strike (Land) initiative, HIMARS will enable the Army to engage targets beyond 300 kilometers. The launcher can fire the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) family of munitions, offering strike ranges from 84 kilometers to more than 500 kilometers. Canadian officials have also highlighted the system’s potential integration with future land-based anti-ship missiles, strengthening coastal and Arctic defense capabilities.
