Italian defense firm Leonardo is intensifying its push to win a training aircraft contract in Morocco, placing the M-346 Master at the forefront of its renewed campaign in a highly competitive procurement process.

Company executives and business development teams have increased their engagement with officials in Rabat, actively promoting the M-346 advanced jet trainer to the Moroccan Air Force, according to Africa Intelligence. The aircraft is being positioned as Leonardo’s primary solution for modernizing pilot training capabilities.

However, the bid faces strong competition from China’s Hongdu L-15 Falcon, which is currently viewed as a leading contender by Moroccan military leadership. Beyond performance considerations, the competition is also influenced by broader industrial relations and past concerns. Moroccan authorities have previously raised issues regarding cost and maintenance arrangements tied to earlier Leonardo platforms, including the C-27J Spartan transport aircraft delivered in the 2010s.

Leonardo is leveraging the M-346’s proven service record in Europe and its limited operational presence in Africa to strengthen its case. Recent developments include Indonesia signing a letter of intent in February for the potential acquisition and support of the M-346F variant, replacing aging Hawk 209 and Hawk 109 aircraft to enhance training and light combat roles.

Additionally, Austria finalized a $1.7 billion deal in December for 12 M-346FA combat aircraft, while Nigeria is pursuing a potential $1.4 billion acquisition of 24 units — a deal that could become the largest military procurement in West Africa if completed.
