Adani Defence & Aerospace has strengthened India’s drive toward rapidly deployable indigenous battlefield systems by delivering two advanced capabilities to the Indian Army under the Emergency Procurement (EP-6) framework: the UAV-Launched Precision Guided Missile (ULPGM) and the AGNIKAA VTOL-I FPV loitering munition.
Together, the two platforms signal a growing shift in India’s operational doctrine toward precision warfare, autonomous systems, and distributed lethality at the tactical level.
ULPGM: Lightweight Precision Strike Capability
The ULPGM represents one of the clearest examples of India’s Development-cum-Production Partner (DcPP) approach, combining design expertise from Research Centre Imarat under Defence Research and Development Organisation with manufacturing support from Adani Defence & Aerospace and Bharat Dynamics Limited.
The missile is engineered for lightweight, high-precision engagements, reportedly achieving a circular error probable (CEP) of around 10 centimeters. Such precision enables targeted strikes against vehicles, exposed equipment, fortified positions, and other high-value assets while minimizing collateral damage.
Its compact design — ranging from approximately 5 kilograms in the VI variant to about 12.5 kilograms in the V2 version — allows unmanned aerial platforms to carry multiple missiles simultaneously, increasing strike capacity without requiring larger UAVs.
The missile employs an uncooled imaging infrared (IIR) seeker, providing resistance against conventional electronic countermeasures. A two-way datalink further allows mid-course target updates and dynamic target refinement, enabling effective engagement of moving targets and rapidly evolving battlefield conditions.
These capabilities position the ULPGM for missions including counter-armor strikes, infrastructure attacks, and neutralization of high-value targets.
AGNIKAA VTOL-I FPV Loitering Munition
Complementing the ULPGM is the AGNIKAA VTOL-I, a portable first-person-view (FPV) loitering munition optimized for frontline deployment.
Unlike traditional loitering munitions requiring launch rails or catapults, AGNIKAA’s vertical take-off and landing capability enables operation from confined or rugged terrain, making it especially relevant for mountainous sectors such as Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh.
The system’s FPV capability provides operators with real-time visual feedback, effectively delivering a pilot’s-eye view that supports precise manual engagement in complex combat environments. Lessons from recent conflicts — including Operation Sindoor — highlighted the effectiveness of operator-guided drones against concealed and mobile targets.
AGNIKAA can reportedly integrate multiple warhead types, including pre-fragmented anti-personnel payloads and explosively formed penetrators (EFPs), allowing missions ranging from soft-target neutralization to attacks on light armored vehicles and fortified positions.
Fast-Track Procurement and Strategic Significance
Both systems are being inducted through the EP-6 emergency procurement tranche introduced following evolving security challenges after the 2025 standoff.
The framework significantly accelerates acquisition timelines by requiring contract finalization within 40 days and deliveries within one year — a departure from traditional lengthy procurement cycles.
A major strategic focus of EP-6 is “Atmanirbhar Bharat,” prioritizing indigenous defense systems over foreign imports to strengthen India’s domestic defense-industrial base. This is especially important in rapidly evolving domains such as drone warfare and loitering munitions, where operational requirements and technologies change quickly.
Operationally, the ULPGM and AGNIKAA fulfill complementary battlefield roles. The ULPGM provides stand-off precision strike capability from UAV platforms at ranges of roughly 10 kilometers, while AGNIKAA delivers close tactical engagement capability with loitering ranges estimated between 15 and 20 kilometers depending on mission requirements.
Together, the two systems form a layered precision-strike ecosystem designed to enhance battlefield flexibility and tactical decision-making for frontline commanders.
