Brazil is seeking to expand its fleet of Saab Gripen E/F fighters by acquiring 20 additional aircraft from Saab, supplementing the 36 jets already on order, according to Pål Jonson. The announcement followed the signing of a declaration of intent between Brazil and Sweden, with the new aircraft set to be produced in Brazil.
Brazil originally signed a $4.5 billion contract in 2014 for 36 Gripen E/F fighters. In March, the country unveiled the first Gripen assembled domestically under the agreement, which includes 15 aircraft being manufactured at Embraer’s facility in Gavião Peixoto, São Paulo. The two nations also agreed to establish a center in Brazil focused on developing technologies and capabilities for the operation, maintenance, and modernization of the Gripen fleet.
