Israel has finalized a multi-billion-dollar agreement with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems to accelerate production of Iron Dome interceptors, strengthening the country’s most widely deployed air and missile defense capability amid persistent rocket, drone, and missile attacks.
The contract includes the delivery of a significant number of Tamir interceptors for the Israel Defense Forces. It follows extended negotiations between the Israel Missile Defense Organization, the US Missile Defense Agency, and Rafael.
Funding stems from the $8.7-billion US aid package approved in April 2024, which allocated $5.2 billion to support Israel’s layered air defense systems, including Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and the laser-based Iron Beam.
The award aligns with increased industrial cooperation between Israel and the United States, highlighted by a recent $1.25-billion deal with the Raytheon-Rafael joint venture R2S for Tamir production and the establishment of a $33-million manufacturing site in Camden, Arkansas. The facility will expand interceptor output and eventually assemble SkyHunter, the US short-range variant of the Tamir, for the Marine Corps.
