European defense forces required a next-generation helicopter capable of operating across diverse environments—from maritime missions at sea to troop deployments in austere land bases. This requirement led to the NH90, a modern medium-lift, multirole helicopter designed to handle transport, combat support, anti-submarine warfare, and humanitarian missions within a single platform.

Developed through a multinational effort aligned with NATO needs, the NH90 is produced by NHIndustries, which includes Airbus Helicopters, Leonardo Helicopters, and GKN Fokker Aerostructures. Since its maiden flight in 1995 and operational debut in 2007, the helicopter has seen widespread adoption, with over 600 units delivered globally.

The project emerged in the 1990s as NATO aimed to standardize helicopter fleets and replace aging platforms with a single, interoperable solution capable of both land and naval operations. The program leveraged the combined expertise of European aerospace leaders, with manufacturing spread across participating nations.

At its core, the NH90 incorporates advanced technologies such as a digital fly-by-wire system, reducing pilot workload and improving flight safety. Its composite airframe enhances durability and corrosion resistance while lowering weight and radar visibility.

The helicopter is available in two primary configurations: the Tactical Transport Helicopter (TTH) for troop movement, logistics, medevac, and special missions, and the NATO Frigate Helicopter (NFH), equipped for maritime roles including anti-submarine warfare and naval search-and-rescue. Both variants share a common design framework, easing maintenance and training.

Key advantages include its ability to perform multiple roles, modern avionics for all-weather operations, and compatibility with NATO forces. However, the program has encountered issues such as high costs, maintenance complexity, and varying readiness levels among operators.

The NH90 is actively used by numerous countries, including France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and New Zealand, supporting missions from naval operations to disaster relief. Operators like the Dutch Navy deploy it for submarine detection missions, while countries such as Spain are expanding its use across multiple military branches.

Looking ahead, modernization efforts under Block 1 and Block 2 upgrades aim to enhance communications, survivability, and mission systems. With planned service life extensions potentially reaching 50 years, the NH90 is set to remain a cornerstone of multinational helicopter operations well into the future.
