Canada and Ukraine have signed a new defence-industrial agreement to manufacture Ukrainian-designed reconnaissance drones in Canada, strengthening support for the Ukrainian Armed Forces while deepening bilateral defence cooperation. The partnership establishes a joint venture between Ukrainian defence technology company Airlogix and Canadian drone manufacturer Sentinel Research and Development, with production focused on intelligence-gathering unmanned aerial systems for operational planning and battlefield awareness.
The initiative forms part of Ottawa’s broader strategy to expand collaboration with Kyiv in areas such as drones, counter-UAS capabilities, and electronic warfare, while simultaneously enhancing Canada’s domestic defence manufacturing base. The agreement follows several recent Canadian efforts to accelerate drone innovation, including a competition launched in May to develop low-cost precision drone solutions for indirect fire support operations. Canada has also expanded the deployment of anti-drone systems to protect critical infrastructure, drawing lessons from Ukraine’s successful use of unmanned systems in operations against Russian targets. Earlier this year, Ottawa committed $663 million toward advancing drone research, testing infrastructure, and next-generation airborne defence technologies.
