The UK’s defense procurement organization has awarded Leonardo UK a contract worth 27 million pounds ($36 million) to provide essential aircraft consumable spares for the nation’s fixed-wing and rotary-wing military fleets.
The agreement has an initial duration of three years and includes four optional one-year extensions that could raise the total contract value to 70 million pounds ($93 million). The supplied consumables will include items such as blind rivets, washers, cable ties, and protective face masks, all of which are vital for sustaining aircraft availability and operational readiness.
Aircraft covered by the contract include Typhoon combat jets, Apache and Chinook helicopters, as well as A400M and C-17 transport aircraft, several of which are supporting missions in the Middle East. The program is expected to sustain around 75 jobs within the UK defense sector, particularly in Edinburgh, Coningsby, and Bristol.
Through a hybrid inventory management approach, Leonardo will oversee stocks of frequently used consumables while providing less commonly required items on demand. The company will also be responsible for demand forecasting, procurement, maintenance support planning, and managing component obsolescence.
By consolidating consumable-spares management at the depot level rather than distributing supplies directly to individual units, the contract aims to streamline logistics, reduce administrative complexity, and improve responsiveness across the UK military aviation enterprise.
