Poland has signed a $4.8 billion agreement with Sweden to acquire three Saab-built submarines under its Orka (Orca) modernization program, reinforcing the country’s naval capabilities amid rising security concerns linked to Russia. The first submarine is scheduled for delivery in 2031, with the final vessel expected by 2038.

As an interim measure, Sweden will provide Poland with a modernized A-17-class submarine beginning next year to support crew training. The agreement also includes industrial cooperation, logistics and operational support, infrastructure development, and Sweden’s purchase of a rescue vessel constructed in Polish shipyards. The deal, described as a historic milestone, is expected to generate around 7,000 jobs in Poland and additional employment in Sweden. Saab secured the contract after Poland selected its proposal over competing offers from Germany, Spain, Italy, South Korea, and France’s Naval Group.
