Thailand is considering the acquisition of the anti-ship variant of India’s indigenous BrahMos supersonic cruise missile as part of efforts to strengthen the Royal Thai Navy’s maritime strike and deterrence capabilities. The proposed procurement supports Bangkok’s long-term objective of developing an independent defense posture capable of safeguarding its coastal waters and strategic sea lanes without excessive reliance on larger military partners. Discussions gained momentum following a defense meeting held in Bangkok in June, where India and Thailand agreed to deepen defense manufacturing cooperation after elevating bilateral relations in 2025. Defense analysts suggest that Thailand’s interest in the Indo-Russian missile system is driven primarily by operational requirements rather than as a direct response to China’s growing regional influence. The move also reflects Thailand’s long-standing strategy of maintaining balanced defense relationships with multiple global powers. While the country continues to maintain close economic ties with China and procure Chinese military platforms, it also sustains security partnerships with the United States and other international defense suppliers. If finalized, the agreement would represent another significant milestone for India’s expanding defense exports. India has already exported the BrahMos missile to the Philippines and is actively pursuing similar opportunities with Indonesia, Vietnam, and the UAE. Jointly developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya, the BrahMos has evolved into one of the world’s fastest operational supersonic cruise missiles. Powered by a two-stage propulsion system, it reaches speeds of Mach 3, operates at altitudes of up to 49,000 feet, and delivers strike ranges of up to 900 km. The latest BrahMos NG variant offers enhanced deployment flexibility, measuring approximately 6 meters in length, 50 centimeters in diameter, and weighing around 1,500 kg—roughly half the size and weight of the original missile.
