The Iveco-Oto Melara (CIO) consortium has officially delivered the first modernized Ariete C2 main battle tank to the Italian Army during a handover ceremony at the Cecchignola military complex in Rome.
This delivery marks the start of an upgrade program that will enhance 90 Ariete tanks, aimed at significantly improving the fleet’s combat effectiveness. Key upgrades focus on mobility, firepower, and enhanced operational control systems.
In addition to these enhancements, the modernization initiative includes a 10-year logistics support package and forms part of Italy’s broader strategy to update its heavy armored forces. The Ariete C2 is a revamped variant of the Ariete C1, now equipped with a more powerful 1,500-horsepower IVECO V-12 turbo diesel engine—offering a 20% boost in power.
The tank features a suspension system with seven road wheels and four return rollers per side, utilizing torsion bars and hydraulic bumpers for improved mobility. Its digital backbone is powered by Leonardo’s C2D/N EVO command and control suite, supported by a four-channel software-defined radio and integrated satellite communication with advanced intercom systems.
For targeting, both the commander and gunner are equipped with thermal sights and laser rangefinders for day and night operations. The new ballistic computer ensures precision firing while on the move.
The Ariete C2 retains its 120mm smoothbore main gun, compatible with all standard NATO ammunition. Secondary armament includes a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun and a 12.7mm weapon mounted on the turret for close defense and anti-air capabilities.
