German troops are set to receive new situational awareness software under a contract with Danish defense firm Systematic, which will supply the Bundeswehr with its SitaWare Edge platform.

The system is tailored for dismounted soldiers operating in fast-paced, often disconnected environments. Delivered on mobile devices and tablets, the software provides an intuitive interface requiring minimal training while combining mapping, force tracking, mission planning, and chat functions into one tool. It also supports integration with third-party applications, enabling frontline commanders to share intelligence, track units, and coordinate missions in real time.

SitaWare Edge maintains secure communications even in low-connectivity areas, relying on tactical radios, satellites, and other limited-bandwidth channels. The deal also provides a development package, giving the Bundeswehr the ability to customize features and add new integrations.

The agreement falls under Germany’s Mission Enabling Service initiative, a broader program to modernize digital command-and-control across land, air, and sea domains. The effort seeks to build a unified information network, delivering reliable communications and situational awareness from headquarters down to individual troops.

This modernization aligns with NATO’s Digital Transformation Vision of 2022, which prioritizes networked forces and interoperability. By adopting advanced C2 systems, Germany aims to boost operational agility and improve coordination with allied forces during joint operations.

Systematic already plays a key role in the Bundeswehr’s digital transformation. In 2023, the partnership was formalized with a seven-year maintenance agreement ensuring continued support, upgrades, and integration of the SitaWare suite across multiple platforms.
