Germany has chosen Raytheon’s SPY-6(V)1 radar system to equip its eight forthcoming F127-class air defense frigates.

The Foreign Military Sales (FMS) request includes provisions for integration support and adaptation services to align the radar with the frigate’s unique design requirements.

Once finalized, the agreement would make Germany the first international operator of the SPY-6 radar system.

The SPY-6(V)1 configuration employs four radar arrays, each comprising 37 Radar Modular Assemblies (RMAs), enabling continuous 360-degree situational awareness.

Built on Gallium Nitride (GaN)-based transmit/receive modules, the radar provides simultaneous air and ballistic missile defense, surface target tracking, and strong resilience to electronic warfare.

Part of the US Navy’s SPY-6 family, the radar currently supports seven classes of American warships, representing a major advancement in maritime air defense capability.

Reports indicate that Germany selected SPY-6 over Lockheed Martin’s SPY-7 radar, though Lockheed Martin will still deliver the Aegis command and weapon control system for the F127 program.
