Indonesia has officially received the first of its two A400M Atlas airlifters at Jakarta’s Halim Air Force Base, under a 2021 deal covering pilot training and full operational support. The second aircraft is expected in 2026.

The handover makes Indonesia the 10th country to operate the heavy-lift A400M, and the second in Southeast Asia after Malaysia.

Built for multi-role missions, the aircraft can transport 37 tonnes of cargo, troops, or medical supplies and take off from unpaved runways, making it ideal for Indonesia’s dispersed geography.

According to Airbus, the A400M can fly 2,400 nautical miles carrying 30 tonnes—enough to reach all parts of the archipelago.

Besides transport and refuelling duties, Indonesia may add a roll-on/roll-off firefighting system, converting the aircraft into a water bomber capable of dropping 20,000 liters in a single run.
