The Netherlands has concluded a framework agreement with Rheinmetall for the manufacture and supply of a broad portfolio of hand grenades for the Dutch armed forces.

The agreement spans an initial five-year period, with an option to extend for a further two years, and covers the delivery of approximately 15 different grenade variants, though specific types were not disclosed.

While the contract’s exact value has not been made public, Rheinmetall stated that the deal is valued in the “double-digit million-euro” range.

Manufacturing will be carried out at Rheinmetall facilities in Trittau and Silberhütte in Germany, as well as at its site in Schwanenstadt, Austria.

The framework agreement builds on existing contracts between the Netherlands and the German defence company for the supply of 155mm artillery ammunition and 40mm rounds.

The deal reflects a broader trend among European NATO nations, including Germany and Estonia, toward securing long-term and predictable ammunition supplies through framework arrangements with regional manufacturers.

Following the exposure of ammunition stockpile and supply-chain vulnerabilities during the war in Ukraine, many European militaries have adopted scalable procurement models that allow rapid ordering without the need to renegotiate contracts.

For the Netherlands, the agreement guarantees sustained access to infantry munitions essential for close-combat operations, urban warfare, and training activities, while reducing reliance on non-European suppliers.
