To improve logistics and operational reach, the US Navy is seeking proposals for a new class of unmanned surface vessels (USVs) capable of carrying containerized payloads.
The initiative, managed by the Program Executive Office for Unmanned and Small Combatants, aims to accelerate the deployment of versatile, autonomous platforms by leveraging proven low-cost designs.
A recent Department of Defense notice invites contractors to submit white papers outlining vessels that support multiple mission types using standard ISO logistics containers and can be built or serviced across different shipyards.
Although a contract timeline hasn’t been confirmed, the Navy intends to award deals through the Other Transaction Authority (OTA) model, with the goal of fielding testbed USVs within 18 months post-award.
The deadline for proposal submissions is set for August 2025.
