Prague Greenlights Leopard 2A8 Tank Deal Worth $1.56 Billion
The Czech Republic has authorized the acquisition of 44 Leopard 2A8 tanks from KNDS Deutschland, valued at 32.76 billion koruna ($1.56 billion).
A separate 1.49-billion koruna ($71 million) contract will cover customization work, while 5 billion koruna ($239 million) has been allocated as an exchange rate buffer.
The deal provides for enhanced protection systems and comprehensive logistical support, including spare parts, training, documentation, and sustainment services.
Pending government approval, the framework agreement includes an option for 14 additional tanks. Prague also intends to procure 19 more 2A8s in specialized versions—engineering, recovery, bridge, and driver training—through a separate contract once Germany finalizes supplier talks.
Depending on the options exercised, the Czech Republic will ultimately receive between 61 and 77 Leopard 2A8 tanks in six configurations, following its decision to transfer all 86 T-72M1s to Ukraine.
