In a further step toward military modernization, Germany has approved the purchase of 20 new Airbus H145M helicopters, a deal valued at around €1 billion ($1.2 billion). Deliveries are planned between 2027 and 2029 under a 2023 framework contract that authorizes the acquisition of up to 82 units, with 62 already on order.
Government estimates place the lifecycle cost of operating and maintaining the entire H145M fleet at roughly €3 billion ($3.5 billion) through 2048. Lawmakers are expected to review the finance ministry’s proposal soon.
The newly ordered aircraft will bolster Germany’s combat and training capabilities, with 15 configured for combat roles and five dedicated to special forces training.
The purchase will draw on the €100 billion special fund created in 2022 to speed up Bundeswehr rearmament after Russia’s war in Ukraine. Key German suppliers such as Hensoldt are set to benefit from the program, providing advanced sensors, electronic warfare suites, and night-vision systems, while additional partners will deliver avionics and weapons integration packages.
