General Dynamics NASSCO has been awarded a $1.7 billion contract by the US Navy to construct two additional John Lewis-class fleet replenishment oilers, designated T-AO 215 and T-AO 216.

The latest award is part of the Navy’s broader multi-ship procurement program that aims to add up to eight more vessels to the class.

To date, NASSCO has delivered four oilers to the Navy, all constructed at its San Diego, California shipyard. The company secured an eight-ship deal in 2024, following a 2022 modification that introduced three additional vessels.

Construction of the John Lewis-class began in 2016, when NASSCO received an initial $3.2 billion contract for six ships.

Operated by the Military Sealift Command, the T-AO fleet replenishment oilers provide essential fuel and supplies to warships at sea, enabling extended maritime security, deterrence, and sea control operations.

Each oiler delivers underway replenishment of diesel and jet fuel for surface ships and carrier aircraft, along with limited dry cargo, provisions, and fresh water.

Measuring 742 feet (226 meters) in length with a beam of 106 feet (32 meters) and full-load displacement of 49,850 tons, each vessel can carry up to 162,000 barrels of fuel, reach speeds of 20 knots (37 km/h), and operate with 129 civilian crew and five replenishment stations.
