The Indian Army has finalized the BvS10 AATV from BAE Systems Hägglunds as its next-generation all-terrain tracked vehicle, marking India as the first country in Asia to induct the platform. Under the procurement deal, 18 BvS10 “Sindhu” troop-carrier variants will be produced entirely in India by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) at its Hazira Armoured Systems Complex, underscoring India’s growing defense-manufacturing capability.
The contract delivers significant technology transfer, including engineering designs, production data, and sustainment knowledge from BAE Systems. This ensures L&T and Indian Army maintainers can independently support the fleet throughout its service life. In addition to manufacturing rights, the agreement includes maintenance tools, logistics support, and lifecycle services, enabling smooth induction. The first operational vehicles are slated for delivery within 24 months of contract signing.
India initiated the AATV procurement program in 2022 to obtain platforms capable of traversing difficult terrains such as high-altitude sectors, marshes, snowbound areas, and mountainous regions. The BvS10, jointly showcased by BAE Systems and L&T in 2023, was evaluated alongside the indigenous Talwar ATV before being chosen. With more than 60% Indian content, the project aligns with the government’s Make in India and defense-indigenization roadmaps.
Engineered specifically for Indian operational needs, the BvS10 Sindhu features enhanced power through a 350 hp engine and reinforced turbocharger. Field evaluations showed strong performance above 18,000 feet, indicating excellent reliability in extremely cold and low-oxygen environments. Its articulated dual-hull design ensures superior off-road performance over ice, mud, loose soil, and steep gradients, while amphibious functionality allows seamless movement through waterlogged regions. The platform’s modular architecture supports diverse missions, from command-and-control and medical evacuation to surveillance and combat logistics.
