Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace has secured a contract worth more than €100 million ($117 million) from the Danish government to supply the Naval Strike Missile Coastal Defence System (NSM CDS).
The purchase builds on Denmark’s earlier acquisition of Naval Strike Missiles for its Iver Huitfeldt-class frigates operated by the Royal Danish Navy.
The NSM CDS package includes Kongsberg’s advanced fire control system, the Naval Strike Missile, and mobile launch units. The missile is capable of striking both maritime and land-based targets at ranges exceeding 100 nautical miles.
Denmark previously maintained two coastal anti-ship missile batteries until the mobile coastal base unit was retired in 2003. Those Harpoon systems, mounted on four-axle Scania trucks and featuring two quadruple launchers, were sourced from Peder Skram-class frigates.
In 2022, one of the Harpoon batteries was transferred to Ukraine to support its defense efforts against the Russian invasion. With the introduction of the NSM CDS, Denmark becomes the fifth NATO member to field the system, alongside Poland, the United States, Romania, and Latvia.
