Germany has placed a €1.2 billion ($1.4 billion) order for 84 RCH 155 wheeled self-propelled howitzers, marking a significant milestone in the modernization of the country’s artillery forces.
The contract was awarded to Artec, the joint venture between KNDS Deutschland and Rheinmetall, under a broader framework agreement with the Federal Office of Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support that allows for the acquisition of up to 500 RCH 155 systems. The framework is also open to participation by other nations.
Under the agreement, Rheinmetall will supply the 155mm gun systems, electrical components, and software, while Artec will be responsible for final assembly, training systems, and logistical support. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2027 and conclude by 2029.
Mounted on the Boxer wheeled armored vehicle, the RCH 155 integrates a fully automated, remotely operated 155mm artillery module, combining long-range firepower with high mobility and crew protection. The system can engage targets while on the move with ranges of up to 40 kilometers, delivering high precision.
Advanced automation reduces the required crew to two personnel, significantly improving operational efficiency and tactical mobility compared with tracked systems such as the Panzerhaubitze 2000.
Beyond Germany, the RCH 155 has gained traction across Europe as a NATO-compatible, long-range wheeled artillery system. Ukraine was the first international customer, ordering 54 units in three tranches, with Rheinmetall supplying key subsystems. In addition, Germany and the United Kingdom announced a cooperation agreement in April 2024 to explore potential British procurement, while Switzerland has selected the RCH 155 to replace its legacy M101 self-propelled howitzers.
