The Danish government has awarded Rheinmetall a long-term contract to supply ammunition for multiple platforms, including infantry fighting vehicles and self-propelled air defense systems. The seven-year framework agreement is valued at several hundred million euros and also includes the provision of 120mm tank ammunition and 155mm artillery rounds.

Initial orders under the medium-caliber portion of the contract cover various 30×173mm and 35×228mm cartridges. These procurements amount to high five-digit quantities and are valued in the low three-digit million-euro range.

The acquisition of 30×173mm ammunition aligns with Denmark’s effort to bolster its mobile short-range air defense capability following the 2024 purchase of Rheinmetall’s Skyranger 30 system. The Skyranger 30 combines a 30mm cannon, missiles, and sensors on a single platform and employs programmable airburst ammunition to counter drones and other small, fast-moving aerial threats.

The 35×228mm rounds will support Denmark’s CV9035 infantry fighting vehicles, which are equipped with the Bushmaster III 35mm cannon. Denmark recently expanded its CV90 fleet by ordering 44 additional vehicles from BAE Systems, supplementing an earlier order for 115 units placed in 2024. Rheinmetall will also supply more than 1,000 rounds of 120mm kinetic-energy tank ammunition, with that portion of the order valued in the high single-digit million-euro range.
