Romania is set to acquire a nearly-new Turkish warship to enhance security for a vital gas development project in the Black Sea.
The vessel in question, the TCG Akhisar—a Hisar-class offshore patrol ship—will reportedly cost 223 million euros ($260 million), according to HotNews.
An additional 42 million euros ($49 million) will be needed to make the ship fully operational.
The deal still requires approval from the Romanian Parliament and is aimed at protecting the Neptune Deep Project, a major offshore energy initiative.
Developed by OMV Petrom and Romgaz, Neptune Deep is projected to greatly increase Romania’s gas output and could position the country as the European Union’s top gas producer.
