The Danish Ministry of Defense has revealed plans to spend approximately 58 billion kroner ($9.1 billion) on air and missile defense systems from Europe, pointing to operational lessons learned from Ukraine’s conflict with Russia.

Denmark intends to buy the SAMP/T system from France and Italy to address long-range defense needs. For medium-range protection, a choice will be made among the NASAMS (Norway), IRIS-T (Germany), and VL MICA (France).

In total, eight systems will be procured, with deliveries beginning in 2025. Parliamentary approval will be required for the full investment.

The ministry explained that while an urgent purchase of a medium-range system was approved earlier this year, the final plan now integrates both medium- and long-range solutions for a comprehensive shield.

At a press conference, Danish officials underlined that this move does not rule out American systems, but reflects a current decision to strengthen European-based capabilities.
