The Polish military has received 38 M1A2 Abrams tanks from the US, marking the largest installment so far under a foreign military sale contract signed in 2022. The shipment also comprised 14 M88A2 Hercules tactical recovery vehicles, used to tow and repair stricken tanks.

The deal calls for a total of 250 M1A2 SEPv3 tanks, which bring improved crew protection, superior mobility, and upgraded combat performance. Also included are 26 M88A2 recovery vehicles, 17 M1074 Joint Assault Bridges, logistics and training packages, and ammunition. So far, Poland has received 85 Abrams tanks, expanding its armored fleet alongside K2 Black Panther, Leopard 2, and PT-91 tanks.

On arrival, the tanks are inspected at the WZL Military Plant in Poznan, which operates as the regional Abrams service hub. Remaining deliveries will continue in phases until 2026.

The Abrams, built by General Dynamics, has been in service since the 1980s but has undergone extensive modernization. The latest M1A2 SEPv3 variant weighs nearly 61 tons, runs on a 1,500-horsepower turbine engine, and carries a crew of four. It can travel over 64 km/h (40 mph) with a range of 418 kilometers (260 miles). Its defenses include advanced composite armor, while its weapons suite features a 120mm main gun, a .50-caliber machine gun, and M240 support guns.
