General Dynamics NASSCO has formally delivered the fifth John Lewis-class fleet replenishment oiler, USNS Lucy Stone (T-AO 209), to the US Navy.

The transfer follows an extensive series of sea trials and systems evaluations designed to verify the ship’s readiness and performance prior to entering operational service.

The delivery marks another step in the Navy’s broader T-AO program, which aims to field a modern logistics fleet capable of transporting large quantities of fuel for surface combatants and embarked helicopters, along with dry cargo to support sailors operating across multiple theaters.

The US Navy plans to field as many as 20 tanker vessels under the program, with six currently under construction or development and four already in active service.

The John Lewis-class oiler measures 746 feet in length with a beam of 107 feet and is equipped with two dry cargo rigs and five underway replenishment stations.

It can carry up to 162,000 barrels of fuel, accommodate 125 personnel, and support helicopter operations. Propulsion is provided by twin Fairbanks-Morse diesel engines, giving the ship a top speed of 20 knots and a range exceeding 6,000 nautical miles.

For self-defense, the vessel is outfitted with torpedo countermeasures, multiple .50-caliber machine guns, automated weapon systems, and surface-to-air missile capabilities.
