The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has commissioned ICGS Akshay, a new-generation fast patrol vessel built by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), to strengthen maritime security, coastal surveillance, and search-and-rescue capabilities. The indigenously developed vessel was formally inducted into service at GSL’s facility in Vasco during a ceremony attended by senior Coast Guard officials and government representatives.

Constructed under the Government of India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives, ICGS Akshay highlights the nation’s growing indigenous shipbuilding expertise. The name “Akshay,” meaning indestructible, reflects the Coast Guard’s commitment to protecting India’s maritime interests while ensuring safe, secure, and environmentally sustainable seas.

The fast patrol vessel is designed to perform a wide range of missions, including maritime law enforcement, coastal security, search and rescue, marine environmental protection, and assistance to vessels in distress. The ship will be commanded by Commandant (Junior Grade) Deepak Choubey.

The induction of ICGS Akshay forms part of the Indian Coast Guard’s ongoing fleet modernization program aimed at enhancing maritime safety, security, and environmental protection along the country’s extensive coastline. The commissioning ceremony was attended by Parama Sen, Additional Secretary (Personnel), Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance; Inspector General Bhisham Sharma, Commander of the Indian Coast Guard Region (West); Inspector General Jyotindra Singh, Deputy Director General (HRD); along with senior central and state government officials and representatives from Goa Shipyard Limited.
