Ashok Leyland, India’s second-largest commercial vehicle manufacturer and the world’s fourth-largest bus producer, is advancing its defence mobility portfolio by investing in next-generation technologies to modernize its flagship military vehicle platforms for the Indian Armed Forces.
As part of this strategy, Amandeep Singh, President – Defence Business at Ashok Leyland, revealed that the company is collaborating with Vehicle Factory Jabalpur (VFJ) to develop a hydrogen-powered version of the Stallion military vehicle. The initiative aims to introduce an alternative-fuel variant of the battle-proven platform, supporting India’s efforts to adopt cleaner propulsion technologies while reducing dependence on conventional fossil fuels in defence operations.
The hydrogen-powered program complements Ashok Leyland’s established capabilities in electric, CNG, and LNG vehicle technologies, enabling the company to offer a broad range of multi-fuel mobility solutions suited for diverse operational environments, including high-altitude regions, deserts, and other challenging terrains.
Alongside autonomous vehicle development, the hydrogen-powered Stallion reflects the company’s commitment to delivering intelligent and sustainable defence mobility solutions. As modern warfare increasingly emphasizes advanced technologies and energy-efficient platforms, these initiatives are expected to strengthen indigenous defence innovation and will be closely watched by both the Indian Armed Forces and industry observers.
