Germany’s federal defense procurement agency has awarded Turbo-Technik a contract to integrate the newly introduced NH90 Sea Tiger naval helicopter aboard the German Navy’s F124-class frigates.

The agreement covers structural modifications to the frigates, including upgrades to flight deck and hangar areas, as well as the integration of systems and interfaces required to support helicopter operations, maintenance, and repair activities.

Once fully operational, the NH90 Sea Tiger will replace the German Navy’s aging Sea Lynx Mk88A helicopters, which have remained in service since 1981.

NH90 Sea Tiger Capabilities

The German Navy ordered 31 NH90 Sea Tiger helicopters in 2020 as part of a 2.7-billion-euro ($3.16-billion) acquisition program and accepted delivery of the first aircraft in December.

The helicopter is equipped with advanced sensors, avionics, and weapon systems designed to enhance the combat capabilities of Germany’s frigate fleet against both underwater and surface threats.

Beyond combat operations, the Sea Tiger can perform reconnaissance, search-and-rescue, and transport missions.

Its mission suite is optimized for anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface operations, supporting weapons such as torpedoes and missiles.

The aircraft also features a dipping sonar system and a modern sonobuoy suite to improve underwater surveillance and submarine detection. In addition, electro-optical sensors and advanced camera systems strengthen maritime reconnaissance and target acquisition capabilities.
