The US Army has issued a contract modification worth approximately $24 million to Saab Inc., the US subsidiary of Saab, for the delivery of 10 Giraffe 1X radar systems to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
The compact radar is designed to detect drones, missiles, and low-flying aircraft, supporting efforts to strengthen air defense capabilities among NATO allies in the Baltic region. With this modification, the total contract value increases to around $70 million. Production will take place in East Syracuse, New York, with completion scheduled by February 28, 2027.
Latvia already operates the Giraffe 1X system, while Lithuania has integrated it into its mobile short-range air defense (MSHORAD) network. Estonia is expected to receive its first units under this latest agreement.
In response to evolving security challenges since the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Baltic nations have intensified efforts to enhance short-range air defense, including deploying advanced sensor systems like the Giraffe 1X.
The radar is a 3D active electronically scanned array (AESA) system capable of rapidly scanning and tracking multiple targets while filtering out non-threatening objects. Weighing under 150 kilograms, it is designed for mobility and quick deployment, with installation options including light vehicles, masts, or tripods. Operating in the X-band, it delivers high-resolution, 360-degree coverage with a detection range of up to approximately 75 kilometers.
