California-based Genasys has secured $1.4 million in orders for its Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) systems from customers across Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.
The contracts include new and repeat orders from Australia, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, Lithuania, and Latvia. The LRAD systems will support naval, coast guard, police, and security organizations in long-range communication and warning missions.
LRAD systems are designed to project live or pre-recorded voice messages and warning tones in a focused direction. They help ensure that instructions remain clear and understandable over long distances, even in challenging environments affected by wind, engine noise, crowds, and other background sounds.
Using Genasys’ Advanced Driver and Waveguide technology, the systems concentrate sound toward a designated target area. Depending on the configuration, LRAD devices can transmit messages across distances ranging from close proximity to as far as 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles).
The systems are available in portable, fixed, remotely operated, vehicle-mounted, and shipboard configurations. Certain models can also integrate with radar or motion sensors, enabling operators to identify potential threats, automatically direct the acoustic system toward them, and issue warnings from a centralized control station.
For naval and coast guard forces, LRAD systems can be used to communicate with approaching vessels, issue instructions, assess intentions, and establish exclusion zones before further action is taken. Additional applications include vessel interception, search-and-rescue operations, port and coastal protection, and anti-piracy missions.
Police and security agencies can also employ the technology for crowd communication, perimeter security, and issuing warnings around government facilities and critical infrastructure.
