Estonia has signed a follow-on agreement with South Korea to acquire three additional K239 Chunmoo multiple launch rocket systems, further strengthening its long-range artillery capabilities.
The latest procurement expands upon a 290-million-euro contract finalized in December for six Chunmoo launchers along with three categories of munitions, including the 239 mm CGR-080 rocket, the CTM-MR missile, and the CTM-290 tactical ballistic missile.
The acquisition complements Tallinn’s growing rocket artillery inventory, which already includes six US-made M142 HIMARS launchers ordered in 2022 and delivered in January 2025. Estonia has also signed an additional agreement with Lockheed Martin to expand its HIMARS fleet with three more systems.
Developed by Hanwha Aerospace for the Republic of Korea Army, the K239 Chunmoo is designed to launch rockets and missiles of varying calibers and ranges to support precision strikes, area suppression, and long-range engagements. Mounted on a mobile 8×8 truck platform, the system can fire 239 mm guided rockets with ranges of up to 80 kilometers, as well as the CTM-290 tactical ballistic missile capable of striking targets at distances of up to 290 kilometers.
The Chunmoo launcher is equipped with dual launch pods that can accommodate multiple ammunition configurations, including 20 K33 131 mm unguided rockets, six KM26A2 230 mm rockets, or six 239 mm guided rockets. A single CTM-290 missile occupies one launch pod, enabling the launcher to carry two ballistic missiles in total.
The system is capable of firing a complete salvo of up to eight rockets in under one minute, providing rapid-response firepower on the battlefield. Additional features include automated reload capability, network-enabled coordination with other artillery assets, and compatibility with extended-range munitions exceeding 100 kilometers in strike range.
