Germany has awarded Safran Electronics & Defense Germany a major contract to deliver more than 1,000 JIM Compact multifunction infrared binoculars to the German Armed Forces. The procurement, executed under a framework agreement signed in 2024 between the company and Germany’s federal arms procurement agency, represents the largest contract ever secured by Safran Electronics & Defense Germany in the country.
The acquisition is intended to significantly enhance the operational effectiveness of German infantry forces by improving their ability to detect, identify, and accurately locate targets in both day and night conditions and across challenging weather environments. The award follows Safran’s recent announcement of a €50 million ($57.7 million) investment aimed at expanding its manufacturing presence in Germany.
The JIM Compact is a lightweight multifunction observation and targeting system designed for surveillance, target acquisition, and geolocation missions. Weighing less than two kilograms, the device integrates thermal imaging, low-light vision capabilities, and a laser rangefinder capable of measuring targets at distances of up to 12 kilometres.
In addition to target ranging, the system incorporates advanced features such as See-Spot laser target detection, image fusion technology, real-time photo and video recording, and live data streaming. These capabilities support a broad range of military operations, including long-range precision fires, close air support coordination, and artillery targeting missions.
According to Safran, the JIM Compact can operate effectively in environments where Global Navigation Satellite System signals are unavailable, provides up to six hours of battery endurance, and is engineered to withstand harsh climatic and operational conditions. Developed in close cooperation with military users, the system is suitable for special operations forces, infantry units, forward observers, artillery personnel, coast guard organizations, border security agencies, and law enforcement teams.
