The Indian Army has selected the MEPRO X6 fixed 6x magnification telescopic day sight from Meprolight as the standard daytime optic for its NEGEV 7.62 mm light machine gun fleet. The selection follows a lengthy procurement process that included extensive operational trials, environmental evaluations, and performance assessments under demanding field conditions.
Designed as a compact telescopic sight, the MEPRO X6 provides fixed 6x magnification and offers an effective engagement range of up to 1,000 metres. Such optics enable improved target acquisition, identification, and engagement at significantly greater distances compared to conventional iron sights.
The decision comes after the Indian Army’s August 2024 order for 41,000 NEGEV light machine guns intended to replace the ageing 5.56×45 mm INSAS LMGs. While the weapon was originally developed by Israel Weapon Industries (IWI), production in India is now carried out at the Adani Group’s manufacturing facility in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, following its acquisition of PLR Systems, IWI’s long-standing Indian partner.
To support the programme’s localisation requirements, Meprolight has signed a Transfer of Technology agreement with RRP Defense for domestic production of the MEPRO X6. Under the arrangement, RRP Defense will manufacture the sights in India, while Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) serves as the prime contractor responsible for delivering the systems to the Army.
The optic was selected after successfully completing rigorous user evaluations focused on durability, accuracy, reliability, and ease of operation in harsh environments. The Army sought an advanced sighting solution capable of extending engagement ranges while improving target recognition for infantry and support weapon operators.
Meprolight, an Israeli specialist in electro-optical systems, develops a wide range of military technologies including thermal imagers, night vision systems, self-illuminated sights, and laser rangefinders. The MEPRO X6 features a wide field of view, high-quality optics, rugged construction, and battery-powered operation with provisions for extended use, making it well suited for demanding combat environments. The sights will be supplied through BEL under a solution built around the MEPRO X6 platform and supported by indigenous manufacturing through the technology transfer arrangement with RRP Defense.
